Note to self – Palms near the beach are often closer than they seems to be

Note to self – Palms near the beach are often closer than they seems to be

Have you ever flown your kite into a palm? I have. Today at Bulabog beach in Boracay I realized that the trees are quite close to the shore on high tide. Luckily I was not the only one…

Putting kites in the palms and getting them down again

I just kitesurfed a little too close to the shore, and the tide was a little too high at the moment. A pipe was in my way, and I popped over it. There were some kind of scetchy landing included.. For a second I lost focus on the kite, and bam boom, it was stuck in the tree as a little monkey.

No, not this one, this sat in another tree.

How to get the kite dowm from a palm, quick tutorial

  1. Step one. Pull the bar. The kite flies up again, and lands in a higher palm. The bar goes up into a third palm.
  2. Step two. Watch the Filippino beach boys compete about who manages to climb the palm fastest and get the kite down. Apparently they had seen this happen before, and had in mind that there might be some kind of reward included in this kind of business.
  3. Step three. Thank the logical parts of your head that you did not try to climb the palms yourself. Watch the scary business that the beach boy are doing.
  4. Step four. Catch the kite when he trows it down. Pay 500 php to the boy. Pump the kite, attach the lines, and ride away like nothing had happened.

(Step five. Watch next kite end up in another palm.)

Everything well here at Boracay. I am starting to land the backrolls to blind now. Have a good day! //Jonathan

  1. You hate to have to know how to do this, but when it happens, it's definitely worth knowing.
